The Personal Information Protection and Electronic
Documents Act (PIPEDA) protects personal information in
the hands of private sector organizations and provides
guidelines for the collection, use and disclosure of that
information in the course of commercial activity. The Act
is overseen by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Mandatory Office Paper Recycling Program
The Mandatory Office Paper Recycling Program is part of
the Waste Diversion Regulations put in place by the
government of Newfoundland and Labrador under the
Environmental Protection Act. Under these regulations, it
is mandatory for organizations in certain jurisdictions to
recycle their office paper. The purpose of the program is
to reduce the amount of material in landfills and help
achieve the goals of the province’s Waste Management
Strategy.

Personal Health Information Protection Act
The Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004
(PHIPA) came into effect in Ontario, Canada on November
1, 2004. PHIPA creates rules for the collection, use
and sharing of personal health information. PHIPA also
gives patients rights related to access to their health
records and how their health information is used.
